Hatfield in Hertfordshire might be one of those towns that many people have never thought to visit. Well, what is there to do in Hatfield? As I discovered, actually, there’s a lot. I went for a glorious day out and found that there are tons of fun, interesting and eye-opening things to do in Hatfield which I’m so excited to share with you. Let’s dive in!

Getting the train to Hatfield

My adventure started the moment I stepped off the Great Northern train. It only took 23 minutes to get the train from London King’s Cross to Hatfield - that’s less time than it takes to watch an episode of Friends. Then, the entrance to the grounds of Hatfield House is right across the road from the railway station. You can't miss it!

If you’re looking for an escape from the city or even just need new ideas for a day out, then Hatfield is what you’ve been searching for. It’s not as popular as places like Cambridge or Brighton, but that’s what adds to its charm. It’s not too busy and you really feel like you’ve escaped somewhere that no one else has discovered yet.

Hatfield House Woodland

So, I crossed the road in front of Hatfield railway station and began my day out. After picking up a map from the kiosk, I went for a walk around the woodland. I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “sprawling” before but that’s absolutely how I would describe the grounds of Hatfield House. There’s greenery as far as the eye can see, and a choice of three different length woodland walks which take you around the stunning grounds.

There’s so much history, it really is incredible. My walk took me past an ancient oak tree which is said to be where Queen Elizabeth I was sitting when she found out about her accession to the throne nearly 500 years ago. There’s also a Castle Folly dating back to the 1780s and a Victorian showground.

Each of the woodland walks takes you back to the main attraction: Hatfield House. Think: Saltburn meets Rivals meets The Crown. And if the house reminds you of any of those shows or films, it’s probably because it has actually been used as a filming location for several popular TV shows and blockbusters.

Feeling like I’d been transported into a period drama, I was keen to explore the gardens. I can honestly say I’ve never seen such beautiful gardens, and I couldn’t believe that they just kept going and going.

There are miniature hedge mazes, meadows full of daffodils and wildflowers, and even a family of friendly chickens. I loved the spring blooms, with tulips, magnolia trees and cherry blossoms at every turn. Not to mention trees surrounded by carpets of bluebells. This would be a perfect family day out, but I also found it super romantic and would highly recommend it to couples looking for a date idea (or even planning a proposal!)

Where to eat in Hatfield

After my woodland walk and exploring the gorgeous gardens, my stomach was starting to rumble and I knew exactly where I wanted to go: The Coach House restaurant. Located conveniently within the grounds, this restaurant is the perfect spot for lunch. And what could be more traditional than a Ploughman's? Trust me, it hit the spot. A generous slab of cheese, crusty bread, honey-roast ham, pickles, apple – pure bliss.

There’s a great selection on the menu, including burgers and pastries. The atmosphere inside was cosy and inviting, and it was a lovely way to relax and refuel after exploring the grounds.

More things to do in Hatfield

Feeling satisfied (and a bit full), I decided to leave Hatfield Park and head to Hatfield town centre. What struck me is just how walkable this town is. Everything is easily accessible on foot and all within a 15-minute radius. I enjoyed browsing the local shops and soaking in the friendly atmosphere. My final stop was The Galleria shopping centre, a modern space with a great selection of brands and food outlets.
