Things to do in Peterborough

So, once we’ve got you there, what can you do? Well, there are plenty of things to do in Peterborough, ranging from visiting an array of historical sites spanning back to Norman times through to a night of sporting entertainment. The city’s most popular and recognisable landmark is probably Burghley House, a stunning 16th century country house featuring 18 staterooms and a huge art collection that includes 17th century Italian paintings, Japanese ceramics and the wood carvings of Grinling Gibbons. Having been used in films such as The Da Vinci Code and Pride and Prejudice, Burghley features excellent examples of English and continental furniture, tapestries and textiles.

The city’s other major landmark is the cathedral, an incredible 13th century structure and a prime example of medieval architecture. The west front of the building is one of the best in the country, with a Roman-inspired interior that offers a real spectacle to match the outside. A great family attraction, the cathedral offers interactive trails and augmented reality animations to add a new level to your visiting experience.

Other great Peterborough days out include a trip to Ferry Meadows country park, where you can relax among the great outdoors, ride on the Ferry Meadows miniature train or take a boat trip up the Nene river. There’s a number of other great landmarks too, including Elton Hall and Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Sports fans can head to the football ground to watch “The Posh”, or Peterborough FC as they’re more formally known, while those who like a flutter might want to visit Peterborough Greyhound Stadium, with race nights every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening.
