Apology to our Fenline customers

We're sorry that services between King's Lynn, Ely, Cambridge and London haven't been as reliable as you rightly expect.

Disruption partially caused by speed restrictions because of dried out peat soil following the extreme heat has been worsened by damage to train pantographs (equipment on the roof of our trains that connects with the overhead wires) which has now been resolved. A revised timetable is still in place, and we understand the impact these issues have had on our customers’ daily lives.

We know customers need more than an explanation. You need a service you can depend on, clear information when things go wrong and confidence that we’re fixing the underlying causes. Together with Network Rail we are working on an action plan to improve which is outlined below.

We're focussing on five key areas to improve your journey:

  • Making railway infrastructure more reliable and better able to cope with extreme weather
  • Improving train reliability by carrying out targeted improvements to our trains
  • Increasing driver availability to help reduce cancellations
  • Making the timetable more resilient so services can recover more quickly when disruption happens
  • Providing clearer, more timely information to help you stay informed and make decisions about your journey

Some improvements will happen sooner than others. While we're already taking action to improve services now, other changes will take longer to deliver.

Teams from across GTR (Great Northern) and Network Rail Anglia are working closely together and regularly reviewing progress to make sure the right actions are being taken and that improvements stay on track.

We know that confidence in the Fen Line service will only be rebuilt through a reliable service. We’re sorry for the disruption customers have experienced, and we will continue working jointly across the railway to provide a service that is more reliable, more resilient and easier to use.

If any journey you have made with us recently has been delayed by 15 minutes or more, please remember that you may be eligible for compensation through Delay Repay.
