Megan's in the Garden City

Best for: Brunch and relaxed all-day dining

If brunch is your thing, Megan's should be high on your list. Just 2 minutes from Welwyn Garden City station, it's one of the town's liveliest places to eat, with colourful interiors and an Eastern Mediterranean-inspired menu served throughout the day.

Whether you're meeting friends for coffee, enjoying a leisurely weekend brunch or sitting down for dinner, there's something for everyone, including plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes. My personal recommendation is definitely the orange juice, which is bursting with flavour and the perfect accompaniment to the open gyros.

Not every visit calls for a full restaurant meal. If you're after expertly brewed coffee, a fresh pastry or a light lunch, Welwyn Coffee Lab is one of the town's best independent cafés. Just 4 minutes from the station, the café roasts its own specialty coffee and serves homemade cakes, artisan sandwiches and seasonal lunch dishes in a welcoming space that's popular with both locals and visitors.

My favourite is their salted caramel brownie, which goes perfectly with an iced latte. Head upstairs to find plenty of seating and large windows with soft music playing, for a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Getting to Welwyn Garden City by train

A photo of Welwyn Garden City railway station signage

Welwyn Garden City is easily one of my favourite day trips from London because of how easy it is to visit without a car.

The railway station is served by frequent Great Northern trains from London King's Cross, Finsbury Park, Stevenage, Hitchin, Cambridge, Peterborough and King's Lynn. Many of the best places to eat are within a five-minute walk of the station, making them ideal for a spontaneous lunch, dinner or coffee stop.

Travelling with family or friends? You could save money with GroupSave and Kids for £2 tickets on eligible Great Northern services.

Welwyn Garden City World Food Festival

An aerial view of Welwyn Garden City World Food Festival

If you’re looking for places to eat in Welwyn Garden City, it’s well worth visiting the annual Welwyn Garden City World Food Festival which takes place every year in May. It’s a vibrant day out with loads of food vendors, from Jamaican jerk and Nepalese street food to Spanish churros, Japanese bubble tea and Belgian waffle wands.

There’s live entertainment, picnic benches and a buzzing atmosphere. It’s a really exciting and fun day out with so many different options for food. If it happens to be a particularly warm May day like it was for the 2026 event, make sure you try one of the Mexican specialty ice lollies, perfect after a warming bowl of Jamaican jerk chicken with all the trimmings.
