Hitchin Market

Date: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (year-round)

Free, no tickets required

Find out more

Hitchin Market has been running for centuries and is now one of the largest markets in Hertfordshire. Expect fresh produce, street food, flowers, clothes, and the kind of bits you didn’t plan to buy but somehow go home with anyway.

On a good day, you’ll find yourself weaving between coffee in one hand and something hot from a food stall in the other, dipping in and out of shops as you go. It’s simple, but it’s exactly what you want from a market town.

Top tip: Saturdays are the busiest, with a full spread of stalls across the Market Place, while Fridays bring a strong antiques presence and Sundays start early with a more casual, car boot-style feel.

Hitchin Farmers & Craft Market

Date: Last Saturday of every month

Free, no tickets required

Find out more

Hitchin Farmers & Craft Market brings in local producers with everything from artisan bread and pastries to cheeses, chutneys and seasonal veg. It’s a slower pace than the main market, with more time spent chatting to stallholders and sampling along the way.

If you’re even vaguely into food, this is the one to aim for. Go early for the best selection, then settle in for a relaxed wander through town or find a bench and tuck into the goodies that you’ve picked up.

Hitchin Beer & Cider Festival

Held at Hitchin Rugby Club, this is one of the most established of all the Hitchin events. Organised by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) volunteers, it brings together a wide selection of real ales, ciders and craft beers, alongside street food and live music.

It runs across multiple sessions, which makes it easy to plan around. Book ahead, go with a group, and give yourself time to settle in rather than rushing through it. This is one of the few Hitchin events where tickets are essential.

Hitchin Lavender

Hitchin lavender summer events

Date: Late June to August 2026 (seasonal)

Tickets required for field entry

Find out more and buy here

Hitchin Lavender is one of the most spectacular events of the summer, when fields as far as the eye can see turn a vibrant shade of purple. While not a single-day event, the season itself has become a major attraction, with cut-your-own lavender, sunflower fields later in the summer, and a steady stream of photographers and day-trippers.

It’s an easy add-on to a day in Hitchin, or it’s worth the trip by itself. This is one of the most exciting of all the Hitchin events, and works particularly well if you’re after something unique.

Hitchin Festival

Date: Throughout July 2026 (month-long programme)

Some events ticketed

Find out more

Running throughout July, the Hitchin Festival turns the whole town into a programme of events. You’re not arriving for one headline moment, you’re choosing from dozens of smaller ones. Live music, theatre, talks, exhibitions and outdoor performances all sit alongside each other.

What works here is the flexibility. You can dip in for an evening event or build a full day around it, and the town still ticks along in the background with markets, cafés and pubs all adding to the atmosphere.

Hitchin Christmas Lights Switch-On

Hitchin Christmas lights switch on festive events in Hertfordshire

Date: November 2026 (TBC)

Free, no tickets required

This is the moment Hitchin properly shifts into festive mode. By late afternoon, the town centre is already buzzing, with market stalls lining the streets, food traders sending out the smell of something warm and indulgent, and live entertainment building a steady sense of anticipation. Families gather early, groups hover around mulled drinks, and the whole place starts to feel like an occasion rather than just an evening out.

As the countdown gets closer, everything tightens into the main square. Then the switch happens, the lights flick on across the town, and suddenly Hitchin feels completely transformed. It’s simple, but it works every time, and if you time your visit right, it’s one of the easiest ways to get into the Christmas spirit without the crowds of central London.

Top tips for attending Hitchin events

  • Plan ahead for ticketed events: Some events, like the Beer Festival, often sell out
  • Arrive early for markets: Especially the Farmers’ Market if you want the best picks
  • Travel off-peak: With advance fares and GroupSave, your day trip will be more affordable than you think
  • Bring cash and card: Most market stalls take both, but it’s useful to have options
