Carnet tickets

If you often make the same journey - like a London business trip or a family visit - you could save money by buying tickets in books of five or 10.

About our Carnet tickets

Save 10% when you buy a book of five or 10 Carnet tickets with us.

Don’t travel every day, but want to save money by booking a number of tickets for your regular routes?

A ‘carnet’ (car-nay) is a fancy term for a book of tickets. It sounds better in French!

Carnet tickets are:

  • Sold in books of five or 10 tickets
  • Available on a range of routes between National Rail stations (not Underground*)
  • Valid for three months
  • Standard class
  • Singles, not returns: if you’re making a regular round trip, you buy a book of Carnets for each direction. Make sure you select a single journey when buying online.

A book of Carnet tickets might be your best bet if you regularly do the same trip, but not often enough to splash out on a season ticket.

Why doesn't my carnet ticket go through the barriers anymore?

Our Carnet tickets offer extremely good value to customers who make regular journeys but don’t travel frequently enough to benefit from a season ticket. Unfortunately these tickets have been subject to misuse, something which over time results in increased cost of travel for all. To better control the use of these tickets, our barriers are sometimes programmed not to accept Carnet tickets and customers will need to present their ticket to a member of staff at the gates. We regret any inconvenience this causes and our staff will continue to help you on your way as quickly as possible.

Why don’t you come up with a better format for Carnet?

The way in which Carnet works where peak and off peak tickets may be used interchangeably and the tickets are valid for use flexibly for a 3 month period means that the ticket itself is set up in a very specific way. Our plan ultimately is to move Carnet to the Key Smartcard but this is not possible in the short term.
