Built by George Maxwell in the 15th century, this elegant and still virtually intact castle was enlarged by his descendent Patrick Maxwell in the 16th century. Patrick was infamous for murdering two of his neighbours and beating his wife of 44 years who bore him 16 children. The oldest part of the castle is a tower built soon after 1478, with a gatehouse.

The connecting range was added in 1597-1599 by the wicked Patrick Maxwell, in a most elegant style. On your visit, you can spot the exquisite Jacobean details on the exterior that make Newark one of the finest buildings of its time, as well as go ‘below stairs’ for a wonderful glimpse into the working lives of the castle’s servants.

While you're there, soak up stunning views over the Firth of Clyde from the castle.
