Bringing local communities to national, iconic paintings to celebrate The National Gallery’s 200th anniversary

Celebrating The National Gallery's 200th anniversary

We are proud to be a part of The National Gallery’s 200th anniversary celebrations by helping make iconic national art paintings accessible to local communities. This is your rare chance to see these masterpieces closer to home in selected museums across the UK. The regional exhibitions running from May are called ‘National Treasures by Rail’.

Botticelli’s ‘Venus and Mars’

The Fitzwilliam Museum - 10th May until 10th September 2024

As Venus the Goddess of Love looks upon Mars the God of War, this 15th century painting was thought to be produced to celebrate a marriage and supports the belief during this time, that women gazing upon beautiful male bodies were more likely to give birth to boys.

Displayed alongside ‘Venus and Mars’ will be three major Italian Renaissance works in different media, and exploring ideas of sex and power, gender and the body.
